George Stevens Academy is a co-educational, independent high school on the coast of Maine, the safest state in the United States. The Academy is a caring educational community committed to meeting the needs of each student with a challenging, comprehensive academic and experiential program that fosters the pursuit of knowledge, inspires creativity, develops self-reliance, and prepares graduates for a purposeful life in a changing world.

Founded as Blue Hill Academy in 1803, it was the first secondary school to open its doors east of the Penobscot River in Downeast Maine. Located in the center of Blue Hill, the school serves local and residential students who come from around the world for the outstanding educational opportunity. International students fly into Bangor International Airport (BGR), which is about an hour’s drive from campus.

GSA faculty members are committed to the success of each student; 65% hold advanced degrees. GSA offers the following Advanced Placement (AP) courses: English Literature, US History, Human Geography, Calculus AB/BC, Probability & Statistics, Environmental Science, and Studio Art: Drawing. In addition, some students prepare for AP courses using Alternative Course Contracts or other routes to the exam. In May 2014, students took AP exams in 16 subject areas. Technical and experiential courses provide pre-engineering students or aspiring architects opportunities to go beyond theoretical learning. Students may also take a college physics course for both college and high school credit at Maine Maritime Academy. The course credit appears on an MMA transcript and can be transferred to the university where the student matriculates. Four levels of English as a Second Language classes are offered. Refer to the Program of Studies on the school’s homepage for complete listing and descriptions of the courses offered.

Upon matriculation, each student receives a MacBook Air to use while he or she attends GSA.

George Stevens Academy has a long and highly successful tradition of preparing students for application to and success at the country’s most selective (including Ivy League) and selective colleges and universities.

The school offers more than forty extracurricular activities and programs, including an all-school Arts Festival, culinary arts, and an award-winning Jazz program.

Students live in dormitories on campus their first year. Most rooms are doubles. Girls’ rooms have a private bathroom en suite; boys’ rooms have private bathrooms down the hall. All rooms feature attractive wood furniture (bed, desk, chair, dresser). The dorms are well heated in winter and are close to the center of campus. All buildings have wireless internet access. In subsequent years, students have the option to apply for a home stay or choose to remain in the dormitory.

GSA is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and the State of Maine Department of Education & Cultural Services. The school is a member of The Association of Boarding Schools (TABS), the Secondary School Admissions Test Board (SSATB), the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), the Maine Association of Independent Schools, and the Independent Schools Association of Northern New England (ISANNE).
